passing by

this sunday was sakina's 23rd birthday. the day passed pretty quietly, but i was aware of it. it is hard to imagine that it is already three years ago that taher and i took a cake to sakina in the hospital for her 20th birthday; we were just trying to cheer her up and i remember telling her that her 21st birthday would be much more full of hoopla than her dreary 20th.

if she was alive, at 23, she wouldn't look that much older than she did at 20. but the rest of us- we're getting older. when i look around at all of us, i know we probably look older, objectively- but nobody seems older to me. in 10 or 15 years, i still doubt anyone will look older to me. but compared to our memories of sakina, we will be ancient. i can't believe that the day will come when we're parents or grandparents and i will still think of sakina as this fresh-faced beautiful young girl.

it's weird, sometimes this all feels like a dream. i still find it hard to believe it happened...

i agree with you that it's good to realize we're all moving forward- i think personally, mentioning her birthday is like commemorating her-remembering her-and taking stock of how we all have moved forward...
